What is Sociology?

The U.S. is an example of a society, which has a distinct group of people who share a culture and a territory.

Everyday actors are people who have the practical knowledge needed to get through daily life. Unlike social analysts, everyday actors do not have the scientific knowledge of how things work in the social world.

Microsociology is the level of analysis that studies face-to-face and small group interactions in order to understand how they affect larger patterns and institutions of society.

Sociological imagination should be used to view social issues such as poverty. An individualistic perspective may attribute poverty to laziness. A sociological perspective would realize the larger social forces at play that put people into poverty.

Men in female-dominated occupations encounter "the glass escalator", in which they experience rapid rates of advancement.  In contrast, women in male-dominated occupations encounter the "glass ceiling", in which they face limits on their advancement.
